Kari’s Law and the RAY BAUM’S Act are two laws passed in 2018 that change how hotels handle emergency calls. Kari’s Law will require that all Multi-Line Telephone Systems (MLTS) allow their users to dial 911 directly from any line without being routed through any internal processes or needing to dial a prefix.
Kari’s Law also includes an “onsite notification” requirement. If a guest or staff member dials 911, not only will the call be connected to emergency services, but the front desk in that establishment will be notified which of the many phones in the hotel was used to dial 911. Employees in the building are likely to be able to respond more quickly than emergency services, providing vital services. Employees can then direct emergency responders to the correct location in the property.
RAY BAUM’S Act requires that 911 calls automatically pass along “dispatchable location” — including street address, floor level, and room number or location description of the caller — to first responders so they can find the caller as quickly as possible. If the front desk is not staffed and a 911 caller isn’t able to remember or communicate their location, emergency services will still be able to find the caller.
“The new Voiceware Express system is designed not only to save hotels on their total cost of the solution and ongoing voice service, but it will also allow hotels to be completely compliant with all new regulations and legislation around emergency calls,” says Frank Melville, CEO of Phonesuite, Inc. “We’re dedicated to making sure that all of our clients have up-to-date communications systems, and Voiceware Express is the latest and greatest in that effort.”
